HOWTO: Remove duplicates from GMail Contacts

Introduction

I recently got a T-Mobile G-1. It draws its contact list from GMail. Unfortunately, GMail has a bad habit of duplicating your contacts which makes it difficult to find the right contact on the phone. Using a bit of external software, it’s not too hard to remove/combine those duplicate entries.

You’ll need

Instructions

  1. Install Thunderbird and the two extensions.
  2. Use Tools > Zindus to sync your GMail contacts into Thunderbird. I copied them into a new Thunderbird addressbook so that nothing in my Thunderbird address book would conflict.
  3. Open the Address Book and select the address book which has your newly synced contacts.
  4. Use Duplicates > Find and manage duplicates to go through the address book and remove/combine duplicate entries.
  5. Back in the main Thunderbird window, use Tools > Zindus to sync your contacts again. This will copy your changes back up to GMail.
  6. Enjoy your new, duplicate free Contacts!
