Eugene, OR

Our friends Price and Tara moved out to Eugene over the summer; Price is pursuing a MA in Public Policy with a focus on transportation policy, and Tara works in a brain lab on campus. After we had a chance to settle for a bit, the 6 of us went on an impromptu tour of the UOregon campus. It’s a nice mix of older and newer buildings, but they all seem to fit together. One of the newest is the business building, which was designed with lots of green principles in mind. There are lots of windows, and the windows that surround the front door stretch to the roof. Embedded in all of those windows are small solar panels, which along with panels on the roof, provide most if not all of the power for the building. It recycles its water to water the plants outside. They’ve also got a huge sports complex; apparently Duck sports are really kind of a big deal.

Normally when we’ve stayed with people we’ve gone out to eat and into the city for drinks. In Eugene, we stayed in and had a delicious little BBQ. It was a nice change of pace, and I liked that much more than our time in the cities.
